Nature Nights Pt. 2

Last night, was another awesome Nature Night at Oak Canyon Nature Center in Anaheim, CA. Last night’s presentation was about scat.

We went to the show and met up with some family friends. They are the ones who got us started in going and we are in love with this place!

We started off the evening hanging out in the Nature Center where we checked out snakes, cockroaches, tarantulas, frogs, birds, “stuffed” animals, animal skins and so much more. The kids love looking at everything the nature center has to offer. They are open 7 days a week, from sunrise to sunset. During the Nature nights on Wednesday’s they are open later.

It’s a free nature center, but they are run on donations, so it is much appreciated.

Back to last night’s nature night. We took a hike through the trail called Wren Way. We didn’t take the entire path and eventually looped back around towards the nature center.

For this evenings presentation we had a park ranger named Kelly talk to all of us about scat. It was a good presentation, she was very informative and had a really good slide show.

Afterwords, I decided to interview my 8-year-old daughter, Kylee.

  • M: Kylee, what is scat?
  • K: Scat is animal poop.
  • M: Where is scat found?
  • K: Scat is found in, like, wherever creatures are found.
  • M: What types of scat did you learn tonight?
  • K: Frogs, Coyote, Mountain Lions, Bobcat, Birds, and other types of animals.
  • M: What are some things that scat can be used for?
  • K: For building houses, for camouflage, for energy, for shade, for safety.
  • M: What is the number one rule when you come across scat out in the wild?
  • K: Don’t touch it!

Overall, it was a good evening learning about scat and the kids had a lot of fun, but what kids wouldn’t love learning about poop!

There are still two more Nature nights in August.

Next week, we have Wonders of Wild and the last week is their annual Flashlight Walk through the canyon.

Hope to catch you all there!
