Bittersweet

The first day of school. It’s hard to believe it’s here. As I laid in bed getting ready to get up I looked at my baby boy who had crawled into bed with me early this morning. He peaked through his blanket telling me it was time to get up. I didn’t want to yet because that would mean my baby girl is officially a third grader. My son smiled and poked me some more until I crawled out of bed and went to wake up my daughter.

I gave her a choice of clothes and brushed her hair. She wanted them in pig tails for her first day back. She’s been liking the pig tails lately. I think it makes her look younger, so I’m not going to argue. I asked what she wanted for breakfast… Jack in the Box, of course. So, I agreed to go. It’s the first day of school. She gets what she wants… within reason.

We met up with our cousins for some fun pictures before heading out to school. We got two 3rd graders and a 1st grader this year. Hopefully, my baby boy starts preschool on October. They had a blast posing for pictures and being overall goofballs, especially the boys.

As we pulled into the school this morning, the parking lot was full of cars. Parents anxiously dropping off their children. The principal had music playing out front. There were several staff members greeting parents and students as they walked up the front. Friends were excited and giving hugs as they lined up for their classes. There was excitement upon seeing which of their friends made it to their classrooms and sadness when they weren’t with some they wanted to me with. The atmosphere was one of excitement and fun.

For my daughter, we knew going into it she wasn’t going to have her closest friends in her class. The school tells you who your teacher will be on the last day of school. Her best friend will be in the class next door, her other close friend will be three doors down and her cousin will be two doors now. She was already prepared and was used to the idea of being on her own. She was first in her line and that made her more nervous because she didn’t know who was going to be in the class. We weren’t sure what to expect with her being in a GATE classroom and was excited to find out there was a bunch of kids from her Kindergarten and First Grade class in with her. She ran around giving lots of hugs. She anxiously waited to see her best friend (even though they seen each other a dozen times over the summer) and ran off to give her a giant hug when she came into view.

They waited in their respective lines for their teachers to come collect them. It was a reminder of all my first day’s of school, waiting in the pick up line nervous for what my new teacher will bring. Kylee has heard nothing but good things about her teacher, so she’s not worried.

I visited with Katie’s younger sister to wish her well on her first day of Kindergarten while we were waiting and soon the bell rang for them to go to class.

As I left the school, I got treated to an extremely upset toddler who insisted he be allowed to attend school too. That I could “just drive past grandmas house and drop him off at his school”. To him, it wasn’t fair that all the other kids were able to go to school and he couldn’t. He was a big boy and he wanted to learn.

Stop trying to grow up my baby boy. It’s too soon.

Connor is ready to go to school too!
